Braai recipe for Heritage Day

Heritage Day, held on 24 September, is a celebration of South Africa’s melting pot of cultures and legacies. Braai (called barbeque in other parts of the world) is part and parcel of South African culture and this day has been named National Braai Day or Braai4Heritage Day.  steak kebab

Traditional South African braais are not so much about the food…it’s more about the company. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up with long-lost friends and enjoy a glass of wine while nursing the coals in preparation for a delicious meal.

If you are looking to spice your braai up a bit, try the following steak kebabs recipe. It is really delicious.

Recommended wine: Welmoed Pinotage – a typically South African wine varietal. This is  a charming well-balanced medium bodied wine with a vivid ruby-red colour.

Ingredients

1 cup onion, chopped
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 tablespoon Worcesteshire sauce

Cabernet Sauvignon – The king of grapes

Welmoed Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

A recent American winelover’s survey found that Cabernet Sauvignon is deemed to be the king of grape varieties.

The reason for this accolade can be found in the ability of this variety to be cultivated in many world wine regions, producing wines of similar class, elegance and quality as in Bordeaux .

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world’s most popular red wine grape varieties. It is the product of a crossing between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc during the 17th century in France.

This truly global variety has a rich wine tradition within the South African wine industry. Wine has been produced at Welmoed since 1690 and Cabernet has always been one of the key cultivars cultivated in this region.

The Welmoed Cabernet Sauvignon is great example of  how the class and  elegance of this wine variety is also produced outside of Bordeaux.

Welmoed wines celebrates rich heritage

With its proud winemaking tradition and rich history dating back to 1690, what better way to celebrate our country’s diverse cultural legacy on Heritage and Braai4Heritage Day than enjoying Welmoed wines while braaing with family and friends.  Welmoed Picnic scene

Celebrated on 24 September annually, the government has described Heritage Day as an opportunity to celebrate “aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and difficult to pin down: creative expression, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat as well as the land in which we live”.

Our wines seamlessly incorporate our rich history with a modern, approachable wine style, and pair perfectly with South Africa’s “national meal” of braaivleis and boerewors.

To further celebrate our heritage, Welmoed is giving two people the chance to win a weekend away to one of SA’s heritage sites.
