Some people say it’s easier to decide what to braai than it is to make a decision about the ideal side dish. The same salad or pap as a side dish can become too ordinary and maybe it’s time to try for something new.
A biltong potato salad is not too far from the norm, yet it is something new and will be a great, filling side dish.
Recommended wine: The meat usually determines the suggested wine pairing. But as this salad will go with most meats the suggested wine must be versatile and be able to match with many meat dishes.
The Welmoed Rosé is a versatile wine and can be served on its own or with a wide array of dishes.
Biltong potato salad
5 medium-sized potatoes, boiled and cubed
½ cup biltong, sliced or shredded
½ cheddar cheese, grated
2 onions, chopped
60ml salad dressing, preferably oil-based
Mix all the ingredients together, and marinate meat in this mixture overnight, or for several hours before braaiing. Using a sprig of rosemary, continually baste the meat while cooking. This marinade can be made in advance and stored in the fridge until required.

The first European to reach the Cape was the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, who named it the “Cape of Storms”. It was later renamed by John II of Portugal as “Cape of Good Hope” because of the great optimism engendered by the opening of a sea route to India and the East.
Today it still known as The Cape Good Hope but it is can also be called The Cape of Good Wine as great optimism exists because of the opening of new international markets for South African wines.

Here is a quote from her blog:
“The Duckpond Restaurant (and the Welmoed Winery) is a great place to stop and recharge your batteries on a long day on the wine route, with a reasonably priced and hearty menu, lots of room for youngsters to run around, and friendly staff serving good wines.”
