Welmoed Wines East bound

The company of wine people TM has strengthened its foothold in The People’s Republic of China by launching Welmoed Wines, one of South Africa’s established household wine brands into this market. The brand will initially launch two red wines, a Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
It’s the first time that Welmoed is introduced to the Chinese consumer. According to Brand and Business Development Manager for Asia, Mark Lester, the brand is aimed specifically at a market segment that seeks a premium wine offering for their purchase.
“Welmoed is a brand that really over-delivers when it comes to quality at its price point. We’ve worked extensively with our partners on the brand to achieve the consumer cues required to succeed and we’re confident we’ll see consumers reacting positively to this South African favorite.”

Welmoed wines celebrates rich heritage
With its proud winemaking tradition and rich history dating back to 1690, what better way to celebrate our country’s diverse cultural legacy on Heritage and Braai4Heritage Day than enjoying Welmoed wines while braaing with family and friends.
Celebrated on 24 September annually, the government has described Heritage Day as an opportunity to celebrate “aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and difficult to pin down: creative expression, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat as well as the land in which we live”.
Our wines seamlessly incorporate our rich history with a modern, approachable wine style, and pair perfectly with South Africa’s “national meal” of braaivleis and boerewors.
To further celebrate our heritage, Welmoed is giving two people the chance to win a weekend away to one of SA’s heritage sites.

Boerewors Quiche: Traditional but different
Boerewors is one of the traditional South African delicatessens and is much more versatile than people may think.
A boerewors quiche, for instance, is a lovely way to serve something different by using common ingredients.
Recommended wine: The Welmoed Merlot will complement this dish perfectly.
Boerewors quiche recipe:

Pastry:
- 1 1/5 cups (300 ml) Cheddar cheese, grated
- 1 cup (250 ml) flour
- 125 g margarine
Filling:
- 500 g boerewors
- 1 cup (250 ml) Smokey BBQ Marinade
- 15ml margarine
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- handful of rocket
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup (250 ml) milk
- 1 cup (250 ml) cream
Instructions
Pastry:
- In a bowl mix together 1 cup of cheese, flour and margarine until a soft dough forms
- Press into a large, greased pie dish or 2 small dishes
Filling:
- Marinade boerewors in Smokey BBQ Marinade
- Cook on braai (or under the grill), then slice
- In a pan fry onion and garlic in a little margarine, and allow the onion to caramelise slightly
- Arrange onion, boerewors and rocket on the base of the pie dish
- In a jug mix together the eggs, milk and cream, pour over filling
- Top with reserved cheese
- Bake in a preheated 180°C oven for about 1hour 15 minutes or until quiche is firm in the centre
- Hint: To save some time, use your leftover, marinated boerewors for this delicious South African twist on an ordinary quiche

Here’s a great way to keep the World Cup gees alive…

Keep Flying is a simple idea. An idea that matters. And an idea that belongs to all of us .It believes that its all of our responsibility to fly the flag. Every South African Brand; Every South African, and to recognize what the flag symbolizes: Us, and our unity.
A unity that brought the World’s Greatest Tournament to life in a way only we could. A unity that still reverberates across continents a world away. A unity that says to the world, and ourselves: “Hear us, each one of us, as one. Our time has truly come”
“Keep Flying” is simply that. A call to fly the flag. A call to keep flying.

‘Die Kaap is weer Hollands’ as the orange sea invades Cape Town

The team from Holland arrived in the Cape Town for their final group match against Cameroon and a sea of orange has swept through the Mother City.
“Die Kaap is weer Hollands” is a famous South African saying and with all the Dutch tourists in the Cape and the close by winelands, it really seems that the Cape is “Hollands” again.
The Dutch has won all their games thus far and they are poised for a clash with Italy or Paraguay in the next round. I’ve seen many Dutch tourists in the Winelands this week and a few groups also visited Welmoed’s tasting room.
They have the best team bus slogan of: “Don’t fear the big five , fear the Orange eleven” and hopefully they can go all the way.
Are you affected by the moon?

An old werewolf joke asks: Are you affected by the moon? And the Werewolf answers No-ooooo! I can vouch that I’m also not affected by the moon , especially with regards to tasting wine.
But some people believe that lunar cycles can have a notable effect on the taste of wine.
It may seem crazy but there are those who believe that a wine can taste very different depending on whether or not it is sampled on a so-called “fruit” day or a “root” day – those days in the lunar calendar when water and saps rise or fall.
A calendar was created after years of research by Maria Thun, co-author of When Wine Tastes Best: A Biodynamic Calendar For Wine Drinkers. Thun categorises each day as a fruit, flower, leaf or root day, depending on the position of the moon, with the first two being propitious for tasting wine and the latter two not.
I’m still sceptical but it seems that some influential wine market role players like the retailers, wine critics and wine buyers are taking note of this phenomena.
I had a Welmoed Chenin Blanc last night and the moon must have been in the right “fruit” position because I loved it.
